Dudgeon’s first extraordinary custom banquette - designed by David Laws, an ex-Director of Sybil Colefax interior design division, for a Moroccan family for their Japanese house in Tokyo. The idea was to create an Arabic seating unit for men to meet and converse where no plumping of back or seat cushions was required. The total length was around 26 feet and it was covered in magnificent deep red brocade with silver thread detailing.

The finials were designed by David as were the custom bullion fringe and big double tassels. Although the banquette was designed to go along the walls of the men’s majlis, David was insistent that the outside backs be upholstered in as much detail as the fronts - he wanted the effect of large Turkish loose back cushions to appear to be sitting on enormous Turkish seat cushions - whether viewed from the front or the back.

The Morocco Banquette has inspired many other custom pieces by Dudgeon.
